October 17th, 2023 : UltraTech’s Reddipalayam Cement Works, our Tamil Nadu-based integrated unit, has received the “Best Performing Wind Farms for the Year 2022-23” award by the Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA). The award was handed over in the presence of guests like the MNRE Secretary and Joint Secretary, Government of India.
Located around 300km from our unit in a high wind power generating zone, this windfarm comprises of five windmills of 225KW capacity each. The power generated is used for cement manufacturing at Reddipalayam. Nominated under the category of best performing wind farms up to 2 MW capacity, the mills have been operational for over 23 years. In FY23, the farm was responsible for over 1950 tons of CO2 reduction. Similarly, it led to over 1770 tons of CO2 reduction in FY24, as of September 2023.
A set of parameters identified for the evaluation of performance included the availability of machines, capacity factor, age of machines, maintenance cost, waste land development activities and safety. Our wind farm was identified as one of the best performing units and was awarded by the IWPA.
With a downtime of just 1.5% of the total time, the wind farm is part of the move towards the goal of increasing the Green Energy consumption for cement manufacturing. We aim to meet 100 per cent of our electricity requirement through renewables sources by 2050.
Our company is committed to driving sustainability across the value chain of our operations. We are a member of the EP100 initiative which brings together a growing group of energy-smart companies committed to using energy more productively, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and accelerating towards a clean economy.
UltraTech currently has 555 MW of Green Energy capacity, which includes 210 MW of WHRS installed capacity and 345 MW of contracted renewable energy. There has been an increase of over 25% in WHRS capacity and over 28% in renewable (solar + wind) energy capacity during FY23. Cumulatively, this capacity translates to about 19% of UltraTech’s current energy requirements. UltraTech's green energy share is planned to be increased three times to 60% of its total energy requirements by FY26.
